Hello everyone!
I hope everyone is doing well and yes, I am late posting about St. Valentine. Shame on me!
Now, I wanted to write about St. Valentine as I found out about him because I find myself thinking of Cupid in his underwear when I think of Feb. 14.
Back in Venezuela, the date was called El día del amor y la amistad; the day of love and friendship. But very rarely (at least when I was growing up), did you get a friend something for Valentine’s Day. As a matter of fact, we dubbed it El día de los enamorados; the day of people being inlove.
It wasn’t until I got to the States that I learned you can give someone a Valentine’s Day card and it would not mean you were inlove. (Whew!)
Now, according to the Catholic Encyclopedia, Feb. 14 is the date when birds start to pair and female birds choose their mates.
Furthermore, very little is documented about Valentine, except there have been a handful throughout history and they have all been martyrs.
Where does this custom of sending “Valentines” comes from?
Since the birds were choosing mates, so were people! They started referring to the potential suitor as their Valentine and the rest is ancient history.
What do you think about Valentine’s Day? Let me know in the comments below!
