School Registration Time

Hello everyone!

So I was called upon to help out with the school registration since a lot of our Spanish speaking parents cannot fill out all the paperwork on their own.So I went and spent 9 whole hours sitting on a K chair and working on my laptop on top of a tiny little table.

Besides the obvious space issue to sit my butt on, I cannot complain. The teachers are always delighted to get more help and the parents are truly thankful because the school is accommodating to their needs.

One parent in particular walked in: ankle length skirt, torn sweatshirt, and three children with her, one of them being a 10month old. I remember seeing her at one of the events we’ve had in the past but I couldn’t put my finger on it…It turns out she felt sorry for me for having to work such long hours and I told her to leave me whatever leftovers she had from dinner that night,if she cooked.
Gatorade Thirst Quencher
To much of my surprise, she had to come back and bring in her child for K testing and she wanted to talk to me. I expected her to need some kind of interpretation but instead, she was holding up two sandwiches and a Gatorade. The sandwich she made me had ham, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, bell peppers… It really did move me and I got all teary-eyed. This is what makes it all worth it: not the sandwich & the Gatorade, but rather people being thankful for what you do and actually appreciating it.

I was also very moved because I know their resources are very limited and maybe that could have been one of her children’s snacks. I was truly moved.

In other news, I have set up my mobile office here at the school and I’m still calling parents from other schools (I work for Central Office) and translating different forms.

Thanks for reading & buenas tardes,

-Wen
